Bringing Worldwide Focus to Food Safety

world food safety day World Food Safety Day takes place on 7th June 2024. The campaign is jointly facilitated by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO).

It is estimated that on average, every day, 1.6 million people across the globe fall ill due to unsafe food contaminated with bacteria, viruses, parasites, chemicals or other foreign body materials. It is also estimated that 420,000 people die each year from eating contaminated food.

The World Food Safety Day mission

The mission of World Food Safety Day is to raise awareness amongst key stakeholders about the risks, responsibilities and best practices associated with food safety. The campaign is aimed at governments, food operators such as retailers and manufacturers, and worldwide consumers.

Food producers and manufacturers play a vital role in protecting consumers. They should have robust food safety management plans to ensure that finished goods are safe and free from harmful contaminants. One such technique is Hazard and Critical Control Point (HACCP) analysis, which identifies potential risk points and specifies a preventative measure to negate the risk.

Reducing the risk of metal contamination

One common contamination risk is metal contamination, which can enter the process through incoming raw ingredients, human error, or process wear on equipment. Typical metal contamination can include screws, bolts, broken machine parts, screen wire, metal tags, or fine particle surface wear.

Eclipse Magnetics is at the forefront of the development of metal separation and detection systems. Our magnetic separators are ideal to identify and remove metal contamination from bulk materials such as grain, powders, granules, and liquids.

Suitable for use on gravity feed, pneumatic, or conveyor-fed systems, they use a combination of high-intensity magnets and optimum process flow dynamics to ensure that they remove even the smallest ferrous particles.

The Eclipse Magnetics range of separation and detection systems includes the high performance Auto-Shuttle magnetic separator, the High Intensity Liquid Trap, the Pneumag magnetic separator and the Easy-Clean Housed Grid separation system.

Martyn Cotterill, General Sales Manager at Eclipse Magnetics, commented, “World Food Safety Day is a fantastic initiative that really helps bring focus to the importance of high food safety standards amongst consumers, retailers, and manufacturers. Through years of working with major food processing companies, I am delighted that our range of metal separation and detection plays a vital role in protecting the consumer."
